A is American flag. It is believed that Betsy Ross made the American flag. B is for born. January 1, 1782 was the date of Betsy’s birth.

C is for children. She had seven daughters. D is for death C is for children. She had seven daughters. D is for death. In 1836, Betsy Ross passed away.

E is for education. Betsy attended Quaker schools and learned sewing and other crafts. F is for flag. In 1777 Congress voted to make Betsy’s flag the official flag of the country.

G is for George Washington G is for George Washington. George Washington asked Betsy to make the flag with 13 stars and 13 stripes. H is for hemp. Betsy used a hemp material to make the first flag because it was a strong material.

I is for illness. Her second and third husbands died from long illnesses. J is for John Ross. Betsy met John Ross at an upholstery shop and they became good friends. In 1773 they decided to get married.

K is for landmarK. Betsy’s Philadelphia home is considered an American landmark because many people she made the first flag there. L is for live. She lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

M is for militia. Her second husband, Joseph Ashburn, worked for the Philadelphia militia. N is for name. Betsy’s full name was Elizabeth Ross.

O is for one snip. She made the pointed stars that are on the American flag with one snip. P is for parents. Betsy’s parents were Samuel and Rebecca Griscom.

Q is for Quakers. Betsy was part of the Quaker church but they kicked her out when she married her first husband because he was not a Quaker. R is for retired. Betsy retired at age 75 and moved to Abington, PA with one of her daughters.
