Important People to the start of The Revolution 3.1 II c – Patrick Henry – “Give me liberty or give me death” Samuel Adams – organized Sons of Liberty Benjamin Franklin – diplomat in England but went to the Patriot side because of the way he was treated George Washington – commander of the Continental Army Thomas Jefferson – wrote Declaration of Independence Richard Henry Lee – proposed independence

Men and Women Mobilized to Support the Independence Movement 3.1 II d – women made homespun cloth Men joined militias Paid taxes to colonial government Women followed the army to help as nurses and to cook Donated supplies to army Women ran farms and businesses while men were away Slaves and free African Americans fought for Continental Army
