Eli Whitney Born December 8,1765 Westboro Massachusetts He went to Yale and graduated in 1792 Shortly after he graduated he moved to the South

The Problem He noticed the South needed a quicker and more efficient way of separating the cotton fibers from the seed . The usually way was to pick out the seeds by hand.

The Cotton Gin It is a machine that separates the fibers from the seeds The cotton Gin was two times faster than doing it by hand The Gin consisted of a cylinder with teeth which revolved against a grated object. The teeth which grated against the cotton, pulled the cotton fibers and separated them from the seeds. The seeds fell to the bottom and the fibers came out at the top. The Gin could generate up to 55 pounds of cleaned cotton daily
