JCOMM in-situ Observations Programme Support Centre ICG WIGOS Geneva, Switzerland 12 January 2017

What is JCOMMOPS JCOMMOPS occupies a unique place as the focal point for the practical coordination of the in-situ ocean observing systems defined by JCOMM. Its role consists of the following core activities: • to assist in the implementation and deployment of the observing networks through close interaction with programme managers and platform operators, and through Capacity Development and outreach; • to assist in establishing ,maintaining and verifying mechanisms for the timely exchange of data and metadata, including the facilitation of quality control and archival functions; • to develop the consistent set of tools needed to monitor the status of the observing system and its attendant data and metadata distribution, so as to identify action areas and improve the overall effectiveness and development of the system.

This is a JCOMMOPS poster which describes the activities , coordination, monitoring and assistance to all parties involved in marine monitoring activities Recent achievements

Infrastructure Infrastructure established by IOC/UNESCO and WMO In France (Brest). Hosted by Ifremer and CLS. 5 permanent staff, 1 temporary 3 Observations Programme Experts 2 I.T. Experts 1 Science and Communication Expert Information System (« Marine Metadata Centre »)

Recent achievements New information system and website(s) for each observations programme and for the integrated perspective. www.jcommops.org Harmonized Key Performance Indicators for each network E.g.: Activity of the Argo programme

Metadata Status Argo DBCP/OceanSITES GO-SHIP SOT Metadata for all historic/present platforms, 7 digit unique WMO IDs DBCP/OceanSITES Biggest part of drifter metadata available, historical data to be added to the new database Planned to add extended set of metadata from drifter buoys to the database Progress with metadata for moored platforms, agreement on metadata format, must now be populated in database GO-SHIP Cruises with set of data requirements; basic metadata available, now targeting higher granularity (per variable). SOT Metadata presently only for VOS in Pub47/Esurfmar, no unique IDs (ITU)

2017 Plans Challenging work on ship platforms moored buoy metadata, and, extended metadata for drifters Release of the JCOMMOPS API to share metadata through M2M mechanisms (and better serve WIGOS/OSCAR requirements) Coordination of coastal/regional observing systems Gliders, polar systems, marine mammals, HF Radars, etc.

JCOMMOPS / OSCAR 2014-2015: Discussions 2015-2016: 1st Synchronization Discussion on database models: convergence 2015-2016: 1st Synchronization Marine (surface) core metadata in OSCAR XML format extracted routinely by JCOMMOPS and served to OSCAR 2017: Finalization Improved metadata for drifters, moorings, ship platforms TBD with OSCAR JCOMMOPS API to be released (April 2017)=> flexibility for OSCAR More information to be served (e.g. QC feedback notifications, statistics, Map services, performance indicators, etc)
