Wrapping up TP-CASTT CONNOTATION ATTITUDE THEME

Connotation For TP-CASTT, this terms refers to any and all poetic devices, focusing on how such devices contribute to the meaning, the effect, or both of a poem. Look for figurative language, imagery, diction, point of view, and sound devices.

Attitude Having examined the poem’s devices and clues closely, you are now ready to explore the multiple attitudes that may be present in the poem. What is the speaker’s attitude towards the subject? (At a later date, we will look more specifically at tone.)

“Dulce et Decorum Est” The first words of a Latin saying (taken from an ode by Horace). The words were widely understood and often quoted at the start of the First World War. They mean "It is sweet and right." The full saying ends the poem: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is a wonderful and great honor to fight and die for your country.

HOMEWORK Finish any aspects or sections of the “Dulce” TP-CASTT that you feel are incomplete. This work must be done so we may effectively move on to our comparison of the two poets and their poems tomorrow.
