2 TPCASTT - a tool for analyzing poetry Title – before reading Paraphrase – in your own words… Connotation – poetic devices, etc Attitude - tone Shifts - where does poem shift focus? Title – after reading Theme – what is poem saying about life and human experience?

3 Title Before you even think about reading the poetry or trying to analyze it, speculate on what you think the poem might be about based upon the title. Jot down any initial ideas that you have based on this and this alone.

4 Paraphrase Before you begin thinking about meaning or trying to analyze the poem, don ’ t overlook the literal meaning of the poem. When you paraphrase a poem, write in your own words exactly what happens in the poem Use the punctuation to guide you.

5 Connotation For TP-CASTT, this terms refers to any and all poetic devices, focusing on how such devices contribute to the meaning, the effect, or both of a poem. Look for figurative language, imagery, diction, point of view, and sound devices.

6 Attitude Having examined the poem ’ s devices and clues closely, you are now ready to explore the multiple attitudes that may be present in the poem. What is the speaker ’ s attitude towards the subject?

7 Shifts Watch for the following keys to shifts: key words (but, yet, however, although), punctuation (dashes, periods, colons, ellipses), stanza devisions, changes in line or stanza length or both, irony, changes in sound that may indicate changes in meaning, changes in diction.

8 Title Now look at the title again, but this time on an interpretive level. What new insight does the title provide in understanding the poem?

9 Theme What is the poem saying about the human experience, motivation, or condition? What subject or subjects does the poem address? What do you learn about those subjects? What idea does the poet want you to take away with you concerning these subjects? Remember that the theme of any work of literature is stated in a complete sentence.

10 Sonnet 75, by Spenser On a separate sheet of paper, take notes as I demonstrate the TPCASTT strategy on Spenser’s Sonnet 75.

11 Title Since title is a numbered sonnet, skip this section.

12 Paraphrase One day I wrote her name in the sand, but the waves washed it away: I wrote it again, but the rising waves consumed it. “Vain man,” she said, “you’re trying to make a mortal thing live forever. I’m going to disappear just like this name.” “Not true,” I said,”let inferior things return to dust, but your fame will live on in this poem”…etc…

13 Connotation Figurative language “made my pains his prey” in line 4 gives the ocean animal/predator qualities Alliteration in line 2 (waves, washed) and line 4 (pains, prey) build the rhythm of the poem Rhyme scheme…last two lines break the pattern and separate his closing idea

14 Attitude Speaker’s attitude towards the subject is one of optimism that her name—and their love—will live forever in the lines of the poem (My verse your virtues…will eternalize) Speaker is hopeful in the strength of their love

15 Shifts “Not so…” in line 9 shows the speaker’s answer/response to her comment that everything dies…even the lovers themselves

16 Title Again, less to work with, given a numbered title…move on…

17 Theme Theme is the enduring nature of love Nothing can stop love…not the waves, not even death. Love lasts forever
