Designing and Organizing Space Chapter 71 Creative Living

Elements of Design Line – how the room is affected by the dominant lines in the room – vertical, horizontal, diagonal, etc.

Elements of Design Shape – the shapes of objects affect the room’s atmosphere – curved creates softness, square provides stability, etc.

Elements of Design Space – furniture arrangement can make a room seem larger or smaller

Elements of Design Texture – the way the surface of an object appears affects the feeling of the room…smooth is formal, rough is informal, soft is comforting, etc.

Elements of Design Color – color has a powerful effect on a person’s mood

Principles of Design Unity and Variety – designers generally recommend that you choose one color scheme and one style of furniture, but use an accent color or object to create variety.

Principles of Design Balance and Emphasis – objects should be arranged in an even and pleasing way, but still create a focal point or center of emphasis

Principles of Design Proportion and Rhythm – the way one part of a design relates to the whole and creates regular repetition

Floor Plan

Floor Plan Create a scale drawing – allow a certain number of squares to equal each foot

Floor Plan Indicate the width of windows and doors and use dotted lines to show the direction they open

Floor Plan Draw furniture, allowing the correct number of squares per foot for each piece

Floor Plan Traffic patterns – the most direct routes that people use to move through the space in a room
