Color Harmonies

                                                                                         Monochromatic The monochromatic color scheme uses variations in lightness and saturation of a single color. This scheme looks clean and elegant. Monochromatic colors go well together, producing a soothing effect.

COLOR HAS THREE DIMENSIONS OR QUALITIES: Hue Value Intensity

Made by adding white to a color so that it is lighter. TINT Made by adding white to a color so that it is lighter. HUE WHITE TINT = +

Made by adding black to a color so that it is darker. SHADE Made by adding black to a color so that it is darker. + = HUE BLACK SHADE

PRIMARY HUES Pure and basic Cannot be made from any other colors RED YELLOW BLUE Pure and basic Cannot be made from any other colors All other colors are made from these Equal distance from each other on color wheel

SECONDARY COLORS Made by mixing equal amounts of 2 primary colors Found halfway between the primary hues on the wheel + ORANGE = + = GREEN + = VIOLET

Analogous Colors   Color scheme with colors near each other on the color wheel

Complimentary Contrasting schemes use shades from opposite segments on the color wheel. Contrasting bold primary and secondary colors - red and green, yellow and violet, or blue and orange - will create a very dramatic look.

Split-complimentary A juxtaposition of any hue and the two colors located on either sides of its complement.

Triadic Any combination of the primary hues: red, yellow, and blue; and their tints and shades.   Any combination of the secondary colors: violet, orange, and green; and their tints and shades.

Neutral Neutral colors primarily consist of a selection grays, beiges, tans, creams and taupe. Black, white, and gray are not on the color wheel, but are the basis for neutral color harmonies.
