Key Stage Two National Testing Arrangements What are the changes and how can I help my child?

2017 Testing Arrangements… The following tests will be administered to your children as part of the Key Stage Two SATs Week. English Reading English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Paper 1 – Short Answers English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Paper 2 – Spelling Mathematics Paper 1 - Arithmetic Mathematics Paper 2 – Reasoning Mathematics Paper 3 – Reasoning Mental maths has been replaced with an arithmetic test Like last year “levels” will no longer be reported instead scaled scores will be recorded.

The test consists of a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet. The Reading Test… The English reading test has a strong focus on fictional texts. There is also a emphasis on the comprehension elements of the curriculum. The test consists of a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet. Pupils will have a total of 1 hour to read the 3 texts in the reading booklet and complete the questions at their own pace. There will be a mixture of genres of text. The least demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty. Pupils can approach the test as they choose: e.g. working through one text and answering the questions before moving on to the next. The questions are worth a total of 50 marks. Paper One consists of between 400 – 700 words – 30mins to complete Paper Two consists of between 800 – 1000 words – 40 mins to complete

The GPS Test The grammar, punctuation and spelling test (GPS) has a specific focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested. Through the National Curriculum teachers have been made aware of – technical terms in grammar precise spelling patterns There will be no contextual items in the test. Paper 1 - Paper 2 - Single test paper 45 mins to complete Worth 50 marks in total Answer booklet and test script 15 mins to complete the test 20 missing words 20 marks in total

The Mathematics Test There are three papers in mathematics at KS2, an arithmetic test and two reasoning are being administered Paper 1 - Arithmetic Test assesses basic mathematical calculations. The test consists of a single test paper and is 30 mins long. 36 questions totalling 40 marks. Paper 2 and 3 - Reasoning assesses pupils’ problem solving and reasoning skills. Each test consists of a single test paper. 40 minutes to complete with a total of 35 marks per test. Some questions will require students to show their method – space is provided for this. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

All in class and practical work Writing Assessments Writing Assessment are not conducted at a national level. There is no National Test. It is based on Teacher Assessment. Teacher Assessment provides a judgement that is based on knowledge of how the pupil has performed over time and in a variety of contexts. Judgements are based on a broad range of evidence from across the curriculum for each pupil. Teachers will use their knowledge of a pupil’s work over time, taking into account the pupil’s: All in class and practical work Homework We undertake a moderation with other schools in the Local Authority to ensure that our judgements are appropriate. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

What will the results look like? The children will achieve a raw score on the test This will then be turned into a scaled score using a conversion table that is issued by the DfE A scaled score of 100 will mean you are at the expected level and anything above that will show you exceeded the expectations Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

What will the results look like? The KS2 tests are externally marked and marks are returned to schools. To receive a scaled score, each component of the test must have been sat by the pupil and the papers marked. For those pupils, schools will receive: a raw score a scaled score (except where a pupil has too few marks to be awarded the minimum scaled score) either ‘NS’ (expected standard not achieved) or ‘AS’ (expected standard achieved) Conversion table

Scaled Scores Help test results to be reported consistently from one year to the next. Slight differences in difficulty will occur between years. Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score on two different tests will have demonstrated the same attainment. 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. However, due to the small differences in difficulty between tests, the ‘raw score’ that equates to 100 might be different (though similar) each year. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

What happens to the results? In the summer term you will get a school report with our teacher assessment for your child and a copy of their results which current advice says will include both their scaled score and a statement about if they met national expectations Your child’s secondary school will get a copy of the results to help inform their planning The year group results are published in the autumn term school performance tables and reports Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

Support for pupils during the tests… Our aim is to make sure the students are as confident and happy as possible during the testing period. They will take the tests in familiar rooms with familiar adults. We administer the tests in a way that is in line with normal classroom practice for the students. If they usually have a particular adult working with them, that person can be with them during the test. We have make sure that the tests are administered fairly so that they accurately reflect what a student has learned. For example they can have a break if they need it or they can have maths or grammar questions read to them. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins

Support for pupils during the tests… Some children will sit the tests in smaller groups with more adults present so that they can be supported appropriately In some very exceptional circumstances we may not enter a child for the test. For example if they have recently started to learn English and could not read the comprehension paper. These children will still get a teacher assessment. Please encourage your child to view support positively and take up help that is offered to them. It is important they can show what they do know and have learned. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins Y6 Breakfast Club…

What happens if a child is unwell during test week? If a child is unwell on the morning of the test, but is able to come in later, school can make an application for a timetable variation and administer the test later that day provided the student hasn’t had contact with anyone who has taken the test or been online. We will make arrangements to administer the test where it can be taken in the most appropriate fashion to ensure the validity of the outcome. Paper 1 – 20mins Paper 2 – 30mins
