SEXUAL HARASSMENT A FORM OF ABUSE AGAINST WOMEN

The reason for negotiations Workplace Discrimination in General and Sexual Harassment in particular has been identified as one of the barriers to equity, as well as a common form of Workplace Gender Based Violence.

High rate of sexual harassment cases Directive of handling sexual harassment cases to employees and non- employees To guide all managers on how to handle sexual harassment cases To eliminate unfair discrimination To promote a safe and secure working environment To provide SATAWU and Transnet employees and non- employees with credible, accessible and fair mechanisms to deal with allegations of sexual harassment Ensure confidentiality in all cases reported

IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS The union concluded sexual harassment policy negotiations at Transnet and implementation took place in a workplace and SATAWU with members across all sectors.

SUCCESSFUL TACTICS Educate and give direction Awareness Campaigns High employment rate of women in male domination areas Continuation of SATAWU training program in eradication of Sexual Harassment.

ACHIEVEMENTS Decrease of cases reported Women feeling protected and standing up against Sexual harassment within SATAWU and Transnet Understanding and tolerance Continuous induction of new employees and members of the union

Future plans Review Sexual Harassment policy at Transnet and SATAWU Conduct a survey on the impact of the policy Continuous bargaining of SEXUAL harassment policies and workplace programmes in all companies that SATAWU is organising Ongoing Campaign on Transforming workplaces through implementation of the Employment Equity and Skills Development Act. Training of our own shop stewards as skills development facilitators to form workplace Employment Equity forums to address workplace racial and gender in-equality.

Conclusion SATAWU is calling for its members to Unite in eradication of Sexual Harassment as one form of Gender Based Violence, and as one of major barriers to equity in workplaces.
