The Main Idea There are three types of institutions that operate as banks. There are commercial banks, savings and loan associations, and credit unions. A Federal Reserve Bank is a banker’s bank. The Federal Reserve System manages the banking system and controls the money supply.

Question Credit Unions offer a variety of services to their members. Do you think it would be better for you to open an account at a credit union or a bank? Why? There are advantages at credit unions, such as higher rates, that they pay on savings and checking accounts. A disadvantage would be that credit unions do not have many branches.
