Make-New-Again By Remanufacturing, Rebuilding or Refurbishing Fernand J. Weiland APRA Symposium Birmingham

Don’t Throw away But Make-New-Again Our natural resources are finite But we are relentless consuming energy and material But Make-New-Again And give them a second life and don‘t discard the energy and material embedded APRA Birmingham

Components, Products, Equipment to be MNA The list of potential products is extremely long But many which could be rebuild are not (yet) processed APRA Birmingham

APRA Symposium Birmingham Remanufacturing - Is the main but not the only MNA process - Neither is there only one return logistic Sector MNA Process Return Logistics Automotive Remanufacturing Worn units from garages and are returned to the Remanufacturer Aviation Maintenance-Repair-Overhaul Airlines send worn/faulty units to service stations for MRO Industrial Machinery Rebuilding & Remanufacturing Operators return old/worn machines to original or independent rebuilders Medical Equipment Refurbishing Return of old unit to the original or independent re manufacturer IT products Refurbishing and Remanufacturing Users return products to the seller or to collection points APRA Symposium Birmingham

Global Potential (current and future) for MNA is significant Euro: 175 Billions Global Potential (current and future) for MNA is significant - Some sectors are leading - Other sectors are growing - But some sectors are underexploited - And others have not yet started Employing close to 1 million People Carbon emission Minimum 16 million tons of CO2 APRA Birmingham

Many Automotive components are designed for repair or MNA -But in other sectors many products are not designed for rebuilding -Some are just designed for obsolescence APRA Birmingham

Remanufacturing generates Jobs and is an important social element New products are manufactured by automated machines or in the future by robots - Compared to manufacturing new, MNA has a 50% higher content of manual work - And is a strategy/mission to protect blue collar employment APRA Birmingham

To protect energy resources and cut carbon emissions - In Paris it was agreed to limit earth warming to 2° Celsius by reducing significantly the CO2 emission - Recycling material will contribute it by recovering energy (and material) but it destroys the products - but Make-New-Again will contribute more to it by in recovering more energy (and material) APRA Birmingham

Remanufacturing & MNA supports transition to Circular Economy - The old Linear Economy focused on waste and ignored MNA - The new Circular Economy focuses on maximum recovery of material - Circular Economy and MNA enjoys now considerable support from politicians APRA Birmingham

Looking outside Automotive Remanufacturing which Reman sector do you know well? Automotive and HD & Off Road Aerospace Machinery & Electrical IT products & Consumer Electronics Medical devices Others APRA Birmingham

Automotive Remanufacturing a big Industry European Annual Volume : 30 million automotive remanufactured parts European Automotive Annual Sales: 12 billion Euros Annual Savings of CO2: Minimum 1 million tons Automotive Remanufacturing a big Industry Global automotive Remanufacturing is ca. 4 times bigger than Europe Market share of remanufactured components vs. new is ca. 55% Potential market share is however 80% Increasing complexity is a challenge for remanufacturers APRA Birmingham

Aviation Remanufacturing a big Industry - Globally a $ 65 billion industry - An industry regulated by FAA & EASA - Reman Components do not loose their identity - Engine are biggest sector but other components are important too - Remanufacturing is officially called MRO ( Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) APRA Birmingham

IT - Information Technology Consumer and professional are two important but different sectors Consumer products tend to be recycled and professional to be refurbished or remanufactured Mobile devices are not remanufactured but repaired Cartridges are most new but reman is also important Consumer printers are recycled, medium are refurbished bigger are often remanufactured APRA Birmingham

Rebuilding industrial machinery is a hidden Giant Most people/researchers underestimate the size of industrial rebuilding The list/scope of industrial machines is extremely long Users of equipment do not want exchange units but ask for rebuilding of their own machines Life cycles are very long, often production of new has ceased APRA Birmingham

What needs to be done to promote and develop Make-New-Again? Legislators - Design directive for reparability/remanufacturability - Encourage Administration to procure Made-New-Again and review taxation - Remanufacturing must have priority over Recycling APRA Birmingham

What needs to be done to promote and develop Make-New-Again? Manufacturers - Original Manufacturers must make repair information available - OE manufacturers must operate remanufacturing and not only recycling and offer reman products in their selling networks - Together with universities and their own engineering remanufacturers must elevate remanufacturing to higher technical levels APRA Birmingham

What needs to be done to promote and develop Make-New-Again? - Users must first consider remanufactured products before acquiring new products - Users must challenge their suppliers to offer remanufactured products - Consumers must change their life style instead of discarding products consider make-new-again alternatives Consumer/ Users APRA Birmingham

Thank you! Questions? APRA Birmingham
