Dual enrollment Defined in the Career Ladders Dual Enrollment Toolkit: “high school or other eligible special admit students enrolling in community college credit courses” May be: on the high school campus on the college campus taught by qualified high school instructors taught by community college instructors Lauren 2 minutes

Concurrent Enrollment VS. Dual Enrollment Across California, the terms dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment are often used interchangeably. This usage is technically accurate but dual enrollment is the preferred term. ***Lauren will preface definitions section with explanation of how we use definitions differently, etc. etc. Need for them, but need to exercise caution. 2 minutes Career Ladders Dual Enrollment Toolkit

Disciplines in Which a Master’s Degree is not Generally Available Typically CTE disciplines Combination of degree and experience: Example: Graphic arts (desktop publishing): Any bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.

Disciplines requiring a Master’s Degree Typically transfer or GE classes Require a master’s degree in the specific discipline Examples: Humanities: Master’s in humanities OR the equivalent. Mathematics: Master’s in mathematics or applied mathematics OR bachelor’s in either of the above AND master’s in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR the equivalent

Disciplines requiring a Master’s Degree, cont. California Community Colleges are bound by MQs A master’s in education does not meet discipline-specific MQs Equivalency process: when someone has taken all the coursework required for a certain degree but degree has name not listed in MQs. Not commonly used. Finding high school instructors who meet MQs for GE/transfer can be challenging Frustrating for instructors who have been teaching in a discipline for years but don’t meet CCC MQs.

Dual Enrollment Regulations Two types of dual enrollment allowed in ed code: “Traditional” model (established programs) CCAP (new as of 2016)

Traditional Model Classes must be open to the public—no extra barriers to enrollment or attendance (requires board resolution) Classes must be advertised to the public for 30 days prior to start of class Onboarding can present challenges

CCAP (AB 288) Model New legislation as of 2016 Offered for the purpose of “expanding dual enrollment for students who may not already be college bound or who are underrepresented in higher education.” Goal of “seamless pathways to community college for CTE or transfer, improving high school graduation rates, or college and career readiness.”

Both Traditional and CCAP Classes offered at the high school during the regular school day Taught by qualified high school instructors or by college faculty Must follow college course outline of record—all outcomes met, all topics covered; the same as if taught on campus Rigor must be the same as in sections taught at the college Typically many fewer hours in college course than in high school course; all college instruction must take place within specified hours

CCAP (AB 288) Model Classes can be closed to the public if all requirements are met Can’t offer a class through CCAP if it’s “oversubscribed or has a waiting list” at the college Agreement must be given two hearings at each board Additional reporting requirements

Dual Enrollment at Sierra College New program—started Spring 2016 Offers both CCAP and traditional (PACE) classes Exploded from 3 classes in 2016 to 50+ in 17/18

Sierra College Process Centralized process: start with high school district contact and Sierra dual enrollment coordinator Connect high school instructors and college faculty for initial discussions Formal request form comes through district to Sierra coordinator late fall/early spring

Sierra College Process College department and administration vets class and instructor Is this class an appropriate DE offering? Is it part of a pathway? Does the HS have the facilities? Could this offering impact classes on the Sierra campus? Instructor’s Minimum Qualifications are cleared through Sierra HR Instructor is interviewed by college (similar process as for instructors teaching on campus)

Considerations for Dual Enrollment Instructors Additional time commitment (prep, meetings, using college CMS) Additional paperwork (assisting with onboarding, keeping separate college grades, submitting grades) Evaluation: class visit by college faculty, student surveys (not part of any official HR record and not shared with HS) Maintaining “college atmosphere” when some hours are college class and some aren’t
