Humanitarian response to Hurricane Matthew in Haiti (based on United Nations OCHA 14 October 2016 situation report) Humanitarian need   Response An estimated 750,000 people need food, nutrition and help growing crops for the next three months. Organisations are setting up Temporary Learning Centres and delivering school supplies and materials. Some areas have reported an increase in the number of new suspected cases of cholera since the hurricane. An estimated 16,000 people in one of the affected areas are expected to have functional water treatment facility by Saturday 15 October 2016. Medical and water, sanitation and hygiene equipment has arrived. An estimated 1,250,000 people, including 500,000 children, need safe water and adequate sanitation to help prevent the spread of diseases, especially cholera. Over 30,000 people have received food rations containing rice, pulses, vegetable oil and salt. 20 tonnes of high-energy biscuits will be given out. Before the hurricane, sufficient emergency food supplies to feed up to 300,000 people for a month were stored in Haiti. An estimated 106,250 children have had their education disrupted. This number is likely to rise. Mobile cholera treatment unit is being set up to ensure people in camps learn about good hygiene and cholera prevention. UNICEF is continuing its work to vaccinate 500,000 people against cholera in the affected areas. Information and communication systems were damaged in some of the affected areas. In some of these 80 per cent of the electricity networks were destroyed. An assessment was carried out in some of the most affected regions to help with the development of a strategy to ensure people who have lost their homes have access to some shelter. Over 60,519 tarpaulins, 40,000 blankets and 6,500 kitchen sets are in the country or are due to arrive in coming days. A total of 25,160 houses have been highly damaged, 2,381 flooded and 500 destroyed. Information and communication systems are being fixed where possible.
