25-year-old Bekemalicha with her son in the remote village of Badanrero, northern Kenya. Bekemalicha says: “Lots of our animals have died … which is affecting our health and the health of our children, because we depend on the animals and their products.”

In the village of Badanrero, a Kenyan Red Cross nutritionist measures the circumference of the children’s arms, their height and their weight. Many children are small for their age and underweight. They are given a two-week supply of Plumpy’Nut ,  a peanut-based paste designed to increase their weight.

A boy enters an empty well in the village of Garabis, Somaliland. Throughout the area most wells have dried up, which has resulted in the death of more than half of the cattle. Families have lost their income, along with their main source of food and milk.

In the town of Dilla, northwest Somalia, animals are dying of hunger and thirst. Millions of people in Somalia are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Somali Red Crescent Society is present throughout the country, supporting communities to respond to the many and growing challenges they are facing.

Ikran Mohamed, aged 19, takes care of her sheep in the town of Dilla, northwest Somalia. Out of the 200 she had, more than 100 sheep have already died of hunger and thirst. Nearly three million people are at risk of famine in Somalia, in a crisis caused by insecurity, drought and lack of development.

To assist families in the district of Matabaan, Somalia, the International Committee of the Red Cross is providing temporary “onion tanks”. These are flexible, open-top storage tanks that enable communities to store water. The tanks can hold 5,000 litres of water pumped from underground, ensuring that there is more water for animals to drink.
