(A) Flat mount of the retina with the GCL facing down on a large rigid contact lens shown from top and side view. (B) Fixation of the retina with several drops of ice-cold methanol, followed by placement of a second contact lens to smoothen the surface. The sandwich then is placed in a shallow bath of ice cold methanol for 10 minutes. (C) Laser ablation of a 7-mm circular area after removal of the upper contact lens. Use of hyaluronic acid eye drops and methanol as masking substances. (D) Laser-ablated retina with the small rim of nonablated peripheral retina (dark gray) shown from top and side. For tissue lysis, the nonablated rim was excised, and the remaining retina peeled off the contact lens and subjected to lysis by ultrasound.
