2.7 Square Roots and Real Numbers What you’ll learn: To find square roots To Classify and order real numbers.

Vocabulary Square Root – one of 2 equal factors of a number Perfect square – has a rational number as a square root such as: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144… Radical sign used to indicate that you should find a the square root of the number. The square root will be nonnegative. It is also called the principal square root. Once you find the square root, drop the radical sign.

Find the square root 1. 12 2. 5 3. 4. 27.98 5. 0.63

Sets of Real numbers Natural numbers - 1,2,3… Whole Numbers – 0,1,2,3… Integers - …-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3… Rational – fractions and terminating or repeating decimals Irrational Nonterminating decimals and square roots of nonperfect squares such as 3.9274954… and

Classify each number -98 integer, rational 2. irrational 8.7 rational 99 natural, whole, integer, rational 5. natural, whole, integer, rational 6. rational

Ordering Rational numbers Use your calculator to write all the numbers as decimals. (get rid of fractions and radical signs) Figure out order Write the numbers in order but use the original form. Ex: -4.83, 0.4, ,

Comparing Rational numbers (>, <, =) 4.93____ _____
