The Great White Shark By. Angie Dagilis Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Period 1/5

Habitat & Range This paragraph is about the Great White sharks habitat and range. The Great White Shark can be found in cool, coastal waters. Although their most popular In Asia and Europe. But their located all around the world. When their hunting they could be found in the upper parts of the ocean. Also they dive into the deep seas. This paragraph is about where the Great Whites can be found.

Great White Range

Physical Description This paragraph is about the Great White Sharks body description. The Great White has a gray or brown head, tail and back. Although their under-belly is white. They have 3000 sharp and triangular shaped teeth. And these Sharks have cone-shaped snouts and big black eyes. Great Whites are usually 16-20 in length and can weigh up to 4500 pounds. Female Great Whites are larger than the males. They also have crescent-shaped tails. Also have 3 fins 1 on each side and one on the back. This paragraph was about the Great White Sharks physical description.

Behaviour This paragraph is about the great white sharks behaviour. Scientists discovered that humans are not on the Great Whites menu. However dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles and seals are. It is proven they have a more developed smell more than any other animal. They have pores on their snouts. These pores get electric signals from their prey. Great Whites are also known to stick their heads out of the water. This paragraph was about what Great Whites do and their diet.

Threats & Conservation This paragraph is about the Great White Sharks threats and conservation. Great Whites are overfished and caught in gill nets everyday. Since Great Whites are so big they are targeted for sport fishing. Another big factor is that their caught and put up for trade (for their skin, teeth, skin, fins, and liver oil). California, South Africa, and Australia passed a law to protect these amazing animals on their coasts. Sharks are also “finned”. Which means the fisher-men catch the shark and cut their fins off and throw them back in the water to die. Shark fins are sold for very much and also are a main ingredient to a soup in Asia. In Canada and California there is now a law banning this horrible “sport”. Experts say if we change people on their thoughts about how Great Whites are an amazing creature instead of killers they might do more to help. This paragraph is on how Great White Sharks are in danger and what we’re doing to help.

Why It Matters! People should care about the Great White for being endangered for these reasons. First they won’t be around for future generations. So our children will not get to see these animals. Secondly, it affects our ecosystem. Which will eventually affect us. Then our food will run out. Which then will affect us and our trade. People should care because if these one species all die it will affect the whole world.

Interesting Facts! Nobody knows the life span of these sharks! Great Whites don’t chew on their food! The biggest Great White was recorded at 23 feet! When a Great White loses their teeth they grow back quickly (they can grow up to 20,000! Most Great White attacks aren’t that bad!
