What was the significance of the Abbassid, Byzantine, and Mongol Empires? Notes #12

The Abbassid Dynasty led the Golden Age of Islam for Muslims.

An important achievement of the Abbassid Dynasty was the preservation of ancient Greek and Roman ideas. Plato and Aristotle

This led to Muslim advances in math and science, such as developing the study of algebra and astronomy.

The Abbassid Dynasty also developed a large trading network, which allowed Muslims to spread their ideas and become very wealthy.

The Byzantine Empire (formerly the Eastern Roman Empire) controlled key trade routes between Europe and Asia, through its capital, Constantinople.

The Justinian Code was created under the Byzantine Empire and served as a model for later European legal systems.

The Byzantine Empire founded the Eastern Orthodox Church and introduced it to early Russia.

Hagia Sophia in present-day Istanbul, Turkey Like the Abbassid Dynasty, the Byzantine Empire was also able to was able to preserve ancient Greek and Roman culture. Hagia Sophia in present-day Istanbul, Turkey Mosaic

The Mongol Empire was the largest unified land empire in history, created by the Mongols’ use of superior military skills.

As a result of the Mongol rule of Russia, the Russian people were cut off from most of Western Europe.

The Mongols also provided safety along the Silk Road, increasing trade and travel among people living in Europe and Asia.

When Italian merchant Marco Polo visited the Mongols in China, he introduced Europe to China’s riches through his writings, . . . Marco Polo

. . . which resulted in an increase of trade between Europe and China.
