Comma Rules Use a comma before a conjunction that introduces an independent clause (one that can be a stand-alone sentence). I love grammar, but I have a hard time with comma rules. School is fun, and we learn a lot.

Comma Rules Use a comma after adverbs that link two sentences by showing they are related. I love grammar. However, I have a hard time with comma rules. I studied a lot last night. Therefore, I am ready for the test.

Comma Rules Use a comma after introductory phrases. Last night, I went to the movies. In September, I celebrated my birthday. Use a comma to add emphasis. I hugged him, tightly, as we said goodbye. I ran away, fast, trying to get home on time.

Comma Rules Use commas to separate items in a list. I went to the store to buy eggs, milk, honey, and bread. Use commas to distinguish adjectives that come after a noun. My English teacher, a crazy cat lady, told me I need to work on my comma usage.

Comma Rules Use commas after cities and states. I went to a workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, last December. I have always wanted to visit Portland, Oregon. Use commas with direct quotations. “Black cats are the best cats,” Ms. Bauer said. “I think orange cats are cuter,” a student replied, “and better at hunting.”

Comma Rules Use commas with dates. My grandfather was born on October 21, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio. On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, your notecards are due. Use commas between multiple adjectives. That was a delicious, warm, and well-made pie.

Comma Rules Use commas before and after appositives (phrases that explain a noun). Ms. Bauer, my English teacher, is obsessed with cats. Shaker Heights High School, my alma mater, is a great place to be. Use commas to separate phrases that could also be in parentheses. I asked my teacher, just to be sure, if she had received my email. I asked my teacher (just to be sure) if she had received my email.
