Jesus invites Matthew to follow him WALKING WITH SCUM Jesus invites Matthew to follow him

Opening Discussion: What was the worst job you ever had and why?

Create a list of 10 job. Create a list of 10 adjective to describe people. Rank the jobs from best to worst. Connect an adjective with a job that best describes the type of people that do that type of job. Discuss and debrief the lists.

Matthew 9:9 (NLT) As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. What do you know about tax collectors during Jesus time?  What does Jesus say to Matthew and how does he respond?  Why do you think Matthew immediately leave his tax collectors booth to follow Jesus? What does that say about Jesus? What does that say about Matthew?

Matthew responds to Jesus call, by throwing him a party. If you were to throw Jesus a party, who are three people you would invite and why? Who is one person that you not invite? Why?

Matthew 9:10-11 10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.11 But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?” Matthew decides to throw a party for Jesus. Who does he invite? Why does Mathew invites these people?  Why are the Pharisees so offended by the guest list? Why might they refer to them as scum? Would you agree with their assessment?

Matthew 9:12-13 12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” 13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” How does Jesus respond to the Pharisees’ indignance? Why might this offend the Pharisees? Video

Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector Luke 18:9-14 (NLT): 9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

“Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” - Jesus How do these men’s prayers reflect Jesus’ comment on the righteous and the sinner? Are there people you might consider scum, and are too far from God’s grace? What should our response be to our own prejudices? Romans 3:10 says, "There is no one righteous, not even one.”

“Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” - Jesus MAKE IT PERSONAL: Do you see yourself as someone who is sick or someone who thinks they are righteous? How does that shape how you view other people? Romans 3:10 says, "There is no one righteous, not even one.” Confess the ways that you have unfairly seen and treated people, and the way that you have arrogantly viewed yourself. Ask God to help you see others how He sees them.
