Dance Like No-one Is Watching Dance folio and choreography By Candice Owen

Introduction – Let’s Take Off Split students into Boys and Girls groups. Have a group sit on the floor to watch the other group. Get the students to find their own space in the room. Go through each of the moves of the dance. Explain to students that these moves are to be done to a 4 beat count. The dance is about a bird checking around for danger and then flying off. Play the music “The birds flight demo” by DJ B.Lack Each group completes the dance before moving to the next activity. The sequence of dance moves are as follows

Sequence of Dance Moves Squat in the nest - Students start squatting down. When the music starts they pop up to a standing position. Check this way - Step to the left, step to the right then drop down and spin around to face the other way. Check that way - Pop up to standing position. Step to the left, step to the right then drop down and spin around to face the other way. Check again - Pop up to standing position. Step to the left, step to the right then shimmy down to a squatting position. Check around - Pop up to standing position. Step to the left, step to the right then hop around in a circle, with arms out to the sides, until facing the front. Flap our wings - Bring arms in front of chest with elbows out to the sides. Extend arms out to the sides and then bring back to in front of chest. Repeat this 2 more times. Hop around in a circle, with arms out to the sides, until facing the front. Get ready to fly - Bobbing head forward, stand facing the front with arms out to the sides in-line with the hips. Move arms up to be half-way up the chest and then move arms to be in-line with shoulders. Take off - Bring hands to join above head like you are diving, and then jump forward to end the dance.

Squat In The Nest Students squat down on the ground like a bird in the nest resting. When the music starts students move to the standing position.

Check This Way Students then take a step to the left and look to the left as if searching to the left of them. Students then take a step to the right and look right as if searching to the right of them. Students drop down and the turn around to face the other way

Check That Way Students then take a step to the left and look to the left as if searching to the left of them. Students then take a step to the right and look right as if searching to the right of them. Students pop up from the squatting position Students drop down and the turn around to face the other way

Check Again Students then take a step to the left and look to the left as if searching to the left of them. Students then take a step to the right and look right as if searching to the right of them. Students pop up from the squatting position Students shimmy down

Check Around Students then take a step to the left and look to the left as if searching to the left of them. Students then take a step to the right and look right as if searching to the right of them. Students pop up from the squatting position Students place arms out and hop around in a circle. They hop around until they face the front.

This is repeated 2 more times. Flap Our Wings Students bring the hands under the chin in front of their chest, with their elbows pointing out. Students then extend their arms out to their sides bring the arms in-line with their shoulders. This is repeated 2 more times. Students place arms out and hop around in a circle. They hop around until they face the front.

Get Ready To Fly Students bob their head forward and backwards while they spread their arms out to the side about waist height. They then raise their hands to chest height and then again to shoulder height.

Take Off Students bring their hands above their head and cross their hands over like they are going to dive. Students then jump forward like a bird taking flight.

Create Dance Moves Students are separated into groups of 4. Give each student a type of bird (Penguin, Eagle, Peacock and Flamingo). Get them to come up with a move that represents each bird (having a visual of each bird would help students). Each member of the group copies the action when the teacher calls out the name of the bird. For Example: Each student from group one came up with these actions which may be the same or different to the students from group 2 and so forth. Penguin – waddles from side to sideways Eagle – arms out to the side like they are soaring Peacock – prance on the spot with their arms fanning out behind them like a tail Flamingo – stand on one leg, elbows pointed out like wings. When the teach calls out Penguin the students do the movements for penguin, etc. When the class gets the idea change from calling out the bird name to using a different musical instrument for each bird. For example: Penguin – percussion instrument Eagle – piano Peacock – tambourine Flamingo – triangle Get the students to then move around the room doing the movements when the instrument is played.
