Do you like telling stories? Do you know what a narrative essay is? Narrative is defined as a spoken or written account of events or the telling of a story. So, a narrative text means a text which is written in order to tell a story.

But you might be asking yourself, how do we structure a narrative essay? In traditional writing, we say that the focus of narrative essays is a series of actions. Let us take a look at these actions:

Narrative essay structure Orientation (also called introduction): Usually answer who? when? where? and etc. Main characters and the setting of the story are introduced here.   Complication (also called problem): The complication involves the main characters. Here, writers need to set the problem (or dilemma) that changes the normal life of characters and then sets off a sequence of interesting events. Resolution: The complication needs to be resolved. Writers need to use creative ways to create suspense for the readers before resolving the complication.

Now, let us take a look at some basic elements that will help you write effective narrative essays. Think about the plot: What will happen? Setting: Where will the story take place? Choose the characters: Who are the characters? What do they look like? Structure: How will the story begin? What will be the problem? How will be problem be solved? Theme: What is the message the writer is trying to convey?

How can grammar help you as writer produce effective? Grammar is important to produce all types of essays. There are some basic linguistic elements that might help you organize your narrative essay more effectively.

When writing narrative essays, writers should: Use past tense to tell a story; Use creative nouns to refers to people, places, animals and etc; Use creative adjectives to describe people, places and etc.; Use time connectives to show a sequence of events;

Now , to reinforce the ideas above, take a look at the picture and write a 5-line introduction to the story. Remember to review the basic elements studied to help you write an effective introduction.

Descriptive Texts usually: make use of adjectives; use comparisons to help picture the scene; employ the reader’s five senses (how something feels, smells, looks, sounds and tastes).
