Essay Writing

Introduction An Introductory Paragraph should: Begin with a broad “grabber” sentence Mention the novel’s title and author Include a few sentences of essential summary Begin to introduce the actual topic End with a clear thesis statement that states the focus of the essay

Thesis Statement Should be: Specific One/ two sentences Substantial Supportable Arguable Relevant

Have you ever known siblings who disagree Have you ever known siblings who disagree? Most do, and Anna and Elsa, from the Disney movie, Frozen, are no exception to this rule. Frozen is about two sisters who are as unalike as they could possibly be. Their differences and quarreling lead them on a dangerous journey, which ends in the sacrifice of one sister for another. Their story, leads us to understand the value of the bonds of sisterhood and friendship. While Anna and Elsa have completely different temperaments and personalities, their selflessness is what truly unites them, and allows them to save each other.

Body Paragraphs A body paragraph should: Focus on ONE idea that relates to the thesis Begin with a topic sentence which introduces that idea (claim) Have support/ quote that reinforces the idea (support) Conclude with a few sentences that gives a broader meaning to the idea (explanation)

Anna is the definition of light and happiness Anna is the definition of light and happiness. She cares deeply for the people who surround her, including her older sister, Elsa. Anna’s demeanor is sunny and happy. She loves to dance through the castle, and she longs for the day when the gates of the castle will be open, so she can interact with the city. Along her journey, Anna befriends several characters who she is able to help, and who in turn help her as well. One example is the loveable snowman, Olaf, who comes to Anna’s rescue when she is left for dead by Hans, who is trying to take over the kingdom. Having a positive attitude goes a long way in creating and maintaining friends.

Elsa, on the other hand, is cold and distant in the way she approaches the world. Her special powers, of turning things into snow and ice, do not help with this image. Elsa, in her fear of hurting people with her powers, holds back from the world and keeps her distance. She isolates herself in the castle and tries to force Anna to do the same. She is wary of new people, and does not give her blessing when Anna approaches her about marrying Hans. For a time, Elsa ends up living alone in her ice castle. Keeping yourself isolated from others can lead to a sad and lonely existence.

Selflessness and compassion require us to care for others beyond ourselves. In Frozen, Anna and Elsa demonstrate their greatest strengths when they sacrifice for each other. Anna risks her life when she goes out in the wilderness to try to save Elsa from her own destruction. Elsa, in return, stands in front of Hans, who is going to strike Anna with a sword, and takes the blow herself. Her actions, a result of the deep love that the sisters have for each other, save the both of them from certain death. Selfless acts speak volumes about what we feel for those we love, and can have lasting effects.

Conclusion A conclusion should: Stress the importance of the thesis statement Give the essay a sense of completeness Leave a final impression on the reader

Selfless acts are seen everyday all around us Selfless acts are seen everyday all around us. Some selfless acts are large, like when Elsa throws herself in front of Anna, and some are smaller. Each act, however great or small, demonstrates a love for another person, and an inner strength. Even though Anna and Elsa fight, like all sisters do, their ability to put that aside and put the other sibling first, show us their true character. Just like in fiction, putting another before yourself leads to more fulfilling relationships.
