Communicable and Non Communicable Diseases 7th Grade Health

Communicable Diseases Definition: an infectious disease transmissible (as from person to person) by direct contact with an affected individual or the individual's discharges or by indirect means (as by a vector)—compare contagious disease. Examples?

Communicable Diseases Two types: virus and bacterial Virus: no cure, medication will help symptoms, body has to ride it out. Bacteria: curable with antibiotics and medication.

How are they spread? Any ideas? Sneeze Cough Sharing Touching surfaces

Communicable Diseases Influenza Virus Symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, muscle/body aches, fatigue, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Complications: pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus or ear infection. Can be fatal High Risk from flu: pregnant women, elderly, young children, chronic medical conditions

Communicable Diseases Rhinovirus Virus Symptoms: mild fever, headaches, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, decrease in appetite. Complications: bronchitis, pneumonia High Risk: infants, toddlers, and elementary school children

Communicable Diseases Chicken Pox Virus Symptoms: red, blister like rash, tiredness and fever Complications: shingles High Risk: small children and elderly Vaccine can help Prevent the virus

Communicable Diseases Strep Throat Bacterial Symptoms: throat pain, difficulty swallowing, red and swollen tonsils, streaks or spots of puss on tonsils, tender lymph glands, fever, fatigue Complications: tonsillitis (requires surgery) Amoxicillin is recommended by doctor

Communicable Diseases Food Poisoning Bacterial: Salmonella Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, fever Complications: dehydration Wash hands before and after you prepare food or touch any surface.

Non Communicable Diseases Definition: non-infectious and non-transmissible among people. Currently, NCDs are the leading causes of death and disease burden worldwide. Examples?

Cancer Benign or Malignant Symptoms: lump or pain (depending on the cancer) Complications: hair loss, swelling, weight loss, system malfunctions or shut down, death Types of cancer? High Risk: general population

Heart Disease Symptoms: pain in chest, numbness in limbs, nausea, etc. Treatment: diet and exercise, surgery Complications: atherosclerosis, heart attack, angina, arrhythmia. High Risk: elderly, chronic heart problems/defects

Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 Treatment: insulin Complications: poor circulation, wounds have a hard time healing, amputation, insulin support, poor teeth High risk: obese or overweight, genetics

Asthma Cure? Treatment: inhaler medication Symptoms: tight chest, trouble breathing, coughing, unable to catch your breath Brought on by? High risk: those who already who have asthma, can get it as you age

Allergies You can be allergic to anything!! Treatment: epinephrine, avoidence, allergy testing Symptoms: depending on the allergy ( hives, swelling of throat and tongue, runny nose and eyes, retaining water) High Risk: those who already have allergies, you can become allergic to something
