Protozoology is the science which deals with members of the phylum Protozoa. There are many thousands of species of protozoa, of which most are microscopic.
The phylum Protozoa, divided into four subphylum, each further subdivided into classes. Four of these classes contain important parasites of man, and these are: Phylum Protozoa Subphylum 1- Sarcomastigophora 2- Sporozoa 3- Ciliophora 4- Cnidospora Classes Rhizopodea Telosporea Ciliatea not include parasites Zoomastigophorea
1- CLASS RHIZOPODA The parasites of this class move by means of psedopodia and multiply by binary fission. The only parasite of this class which is pathogenic to man is Entamoeba histolytica.
2- CLASS ZOOMASTIGOPHORA The parasites of this class move by means of flagellum or more than one flagellum, and multiply by longitudinal division of the body into two. Several of them are important pathogenic parasites of man for example: 1- Giardia lamblia. 2- Trichomonas spp. 3- Trypanosoma spp. Giardia lamblia
1- Giardia lamblia
2- Trichomonas spp
3- Trypanosoma spp
3- Class Telosporea The parasites of this class have no motor organelles such as cilia or flagella, for example: Malaria parasites.
4- CLASS CILIATA The parasites of this class move by mean of cilia, and only one species, Balantidium coli, is pathogenic to man.
