Background Prior to the Industrial Revolution (1820-1840s) goods were made at homes or in small shops by SKILLED LABORERS. The rate of production was slower until the Industrial Revolution started to improve good production by hand by incorporating machines.

Problem # 1: More People More Problems

Workers Is that guy working? He wants more pay! They want a union! They keep complaining! Are they producing? How much are they producing? Can they produce faster? He was late today!

Questions How did the independents represent skilled labor As a business owner, does it make good business practice to have workers know every aspect of production (in this case coloring)? How could Taylor’s method force down wages? Which method seems better? And why? How did you feel working and just getting by in the rat race? What role could unions play in 1920 factory work? As a worker paying rent, would you be able to afford the picture which is a luxury? How could this point alienate you from your hands?
