ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

What is an ecological footprint? An ecological footprint: the impact of a person or community on the environment. Measured by taking the amount of land and water necessary to produce the goods and services to support a particular lifestyle.

Why does the US have such a large ecological footprint? Industrialization Lifestyle and Choices Transportation Importing goods Energy overconsumption

How can you reduce your ecological footprint? Individuals: Reduce energy consumption Turn off lights, limit water use, use public transportation, eat local food, compost waste (instead of garbage disposal), choose green electricity or fluorescent light bulbs, Recycle Communities: Implement recycling programs, plant trees to offset CO2, use alternative energy sources, constructing walk/bike paths
