LeveR A lever is a long tool, such as a pole or a bar put under an object to lift it. Examples of levers are crowbars, bottle openers, seesaw, and door handles.

wheel and axle Wheels rotate to move objects, and an axle is a rod or pole centered in the wheel that helps to lift or move loads. Examples of wheel and axles are pizza cutters, rolling pins, and electric fans.

inclined plane The inclined plane is a flat surface that acts as a ramp. Examples of inclined planes are playground slides, floor/bathtub drains (slopes toward drain), stairs, and wheelchair ramps.

wedge The wedge is two inclined planes that are put back to back. Wedges are used to separate an object apart or hold things together. Examples of wedges are knifes, axes, doorstops, and pushpins.

pulley The pulley is a combination of a wheel and axle. The pulley has a wheel with a groove in it and a rope to help move things up and down or back and forth. Examples of pulleys are flagpoles, pulleys, window blinds, and winches.

screw The screw is really a twisted inclined plane. Examples of the uses of a screw are drills, jar lids, and tops of a plastic soda bottles.
