Namibia! By Cherry Blossom!

Hello! Hello my name is Cherry Blossom. I am going to do a presentation on Namibia. Hope you enjoy! 

Where is Namibia! Namibia is a country in south west Africa. Namibia touches the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia borders South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Zambia.

Population! In Namibia today there are 2.3 million people living there. 326,000 people lived in Windhoek.

Capital! The capital city is Windhoek. Windhoek means “windy corner” in the Afrikaans language. It is the countries largest city with 326,000 inhabitants.

The Government! The Republic and the Independent have been around since 1990. Independence day is on the 21 of March. The president of Namibia is Hage Geingob.

Religion! Over 80% of the people in Namibia are Christian (that’s more than half of the people belonging to the Lutheran Church)

Currency and Unemployment! The currency of Namibia is the Namibian dollar. One Namibian dollar (NAD) =100cents. 34.3% of the people are jobless. In Ireland its 9%.

The Name! Namibia’s nickname is “ The land of the brave.” The man that gave Namibia it’s name is called Mburumba Kerina.

Language! In Namibia they speak English (official language), and 132 other recognised languages such as Oshivammbo, Nama/Damara, Afrikaans (spoken by most of the population), German (as Namibia was formerly a German colony) and several African languages.

People! Most people living in Namibia are black Africans. As Namibia was a German colony, there are still many Germans living in this southern African country. There are many tribes sharing the land, of which there are the Herero (see the picture with the interesting headwear and often wearing many layers of skirts), the Nama, Himba, and Kavango or the San Bushmen and many others.

Namibia Food There is a wide variety of food available in Namibia with the ocean supplying fish and seafood and the farms in the countryside providing lamb, beef and ostriches. There are as well exotic sounding game like kudu and springbox.

Namib Desert! The most parts of the country lie on a high plateau. The central plateau is over 2000m high and borders the Skeleton Coast with the Namib Desert in the West, the Orange River in the South and the Kalahari Desert in the East. The Namib Desert stretches along the Atlantic ocean over 1000km with huge dunes as far as the eye can see. This desert is considered the oldest desert in the world and has been arid for more than 55 million years. The Namib also has some highest dunes in the world.

Thanks and Goodbye! Thank you for watching my power point. I hoped you enjoyed!  I hope I gave lots of information. Namibian Proverb The earth is not ours, it is a treasure we hold in trust for future generations.
