DAILY OBJECTIVES -Describe the broad goals of “Healthy People 2020” -Identify three steps you can take to meet your personal health goals.

Healthy people 2020 four broad goals Increase the quality and years of healthy life. Eliminate differences in health based on race, ethnic group, or income. Create social and physical environments that promote good health. Promote healthy behaviors, health development, and quality of life across all life stages. PREVENTION: Taking action to avoid disease, injury, and other negative outcomes.

Building Health Skills There are three steps you can take to help meet your personal health goals Gaining Awareness Gaining Knowledge Building Health Skills

Gaining awareness - You must first be able to recognize a health problem before you can do anything about it. - You know what it’s like when you twist your ankle or get a cold. -You may not know what signs of high blood pressure are. Go to your doctor for regular check-ups!

Gaining knowledge Once you know about a health problem, the next step is to learn about the problem. What are: causes, warning signs, possible outcomes?? How is the problem prevented or treated?? What are the risk factors?? Magazines, Web sites, friends

Building health skills Analyzing Influences Accessing Information Communicating Making Decisions Setting Goals Practicing Healthful Behaviors Advocacy

Key vocabulary words ACTION PLAN: Series of specific steps you can take to achieve your goal. ADVOCACY: Using communication to influence and support others in making positive health decisions.

Achieving health Literacy HEALTH LITERACY: The ability to gather, understand, and use health information to improve your own health. Example: You become aware that the amount of fat in a diet is a health concern, you can learn which foods are high in fat. Then apply the skills of decision making and setting goals to lower your intake of high-fat foods.
