Teacher Certification How it will benefit Career Tech

Some of our best candidates to teach Career Tech courses come straight from industry.

How do you get a teacher alternatively certified? Figure out what certification is required to teach the assigned courses. Some teacher certifications require specialized degrees, industry certifications and work experience. 127 different CATE course offerings, 22 different CATE teacher certifications offered in Texas Find a teacher certification program for teacher to go through. The average cost of teacher alternative certification program is $4-5,000.

The Interview Cut in pay Work with 25-30 teenagers at one time Pay for certification/complete program in one year in the evenings, weekends and over the summer.

Benefits to Eliminating Certification for Career Tech course Easier transition from industry to teaching Could hire a certified industry professional to teach a specialized certification course without hiring them full time. Better selection of candidates to pick from

Other Important Factors Eliminating certifications will only apply to Career Tech courses Background checks and fingerprinting is done for all PISD employees Teachers that do not get certified still have to take Classroom Management Training

Uniform School Start Date Current law prohibits school districts from starting school before the fourth Monday in August. Texas Education Code no longer defines 180 days of instruction as an acceptable school year. Instead, the requirement has been changed to at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, with one day defined as 420 minutes.

Flexibility in Start Date What if we Could Change It?

Eliminate imbalanced 6 weeks/semesters while still ending the first semester before the holiday break Ease stress on students and teachers who get behind Align with UIL Eligibility Balance of the TEKS/Scope and Sequence for first semester (including semester AP courses) Align calendar with TCC, AP and STAAR/EOC timelines Ensure hours/seat time requirements are met for Certification courses
