nSW with Alignment Bars March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

nSW Alignment Design Review Installation of the sensor on the chambers as they are unpacked at CERN. Chambers are mounted on flat tables (granite or optical) with the surface on which we install alignment platforms facing up. This is done before electronics is installed on the chambers. A precision installation jig is place over the chambers and registered to the construction alignment features that define the location of the precision measurement components. Source platforms are attached to the installation plates and epoxy applied. The installation plates are set on the jig. The epoxy cures overnight. The next morning we confirm that the jig has remained in position. After that the jig is removed. Installation platform positions are measured and recorded. At this point the chamber is available for further work by chamber crews. March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

New Proximity Devices New low profile short focal length BCAM Source platform with four sources, two pointing in each direction March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

Location of Proximity Sources Source platforms installed using precision reference locating jig. Platforms are epoxied during chamber commissioning at CERN. Sources shown are for MM chambers, the sTGC chambers have a similar layout. MM1 MM2 Source Platform March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

Jig for Installation of Source Plates Jig base. Reference points aligned with reference points used to construct chambers. Spheres Kinematic Mount Kinematic platform with source platform attached Quadruplet Source Platform Source platform jig base set on top of a quadruplet positioned by two quadruplet alignment pins. March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

Installation of Optical Fibers Optical fibers are installed when the wedges are in vertical storage. For MicroMegas wedges we require access to both sides of the wedge with a working space of at least 1.5 meters. For the sTGC wedges we require access to the side of the wedge facing the MicroMegas chambers with at least 1.5 meters working space. Fibers are inserted in the source platforms and brought to the edge of the wedge. Fiber transmission is tested and replaced if necessary. Fibers are then bundled and secured. After this the wedges can be put together into a sector. March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

Alignment Preparation Room A room is needed at each Assembly Site. March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review

nSW Alignment Design Review Conclusions We will work with TC engineers to install alignment bars in the nSW structure as it is being built. For each of the MM quadruplets and each of the sTGC wedges we will need one full day to attach the alignment sensors. Afternoon to epoxy sensors to chambers. Overnight epoxy sets. The next morning we remove jigs and measure platforms. We will maintain a crew of at least two people at CERN for the entire process of chamber certification. We will need two alignment work room. One in BB5 and the other in building 180. March 12, 2015 nSW Alignment Design Review
