The Emotional Nature of Intelligence Chapter 7

Connections from the emotional system to the cognitive system are stronger than vice versa Memory: Recollection of emotions related to the eventbiological changes Recollections = spider mapevent plus other associated events (+ or -) Emotions = complicated collection of patterned chemical and neural responses that regulate an organism in the manner that is advantageous to its survival Bodily humorsmiddle ages Response to assessments to internal and external informationrise measurable physiological states Dynamic process, socially influenced, value appraising Is a subconscious process Perceptionreflexive nature of the process Intelligence (orbifrontal lobes) evaluate the reality of such reflexes and acts upon them = feeling

The Emotional Nature of Intelligence is: Attentive Neural and glandular systems that trigger changes in mind-body states, reflexive changes, that arouse the brain’s attention to what it is important Judgmental Reflexive arousal systems associated with emotions, interact with rational reasoning in the brain to evaluate the merits of events and options Motivating Emotions both arouses and sustains passions about things that matter Manageable The brain is able to recognize and mediate emotional responses after the fact, a capacity called emotional intelligence

History of the Brain All about body body chemical system organisms without brains Brain developed and took over those functions Gut instinct example The nose knowsability to detect, organize and recall a wide range of scentswhat is good and bad to eat (survival = need to judge) Emotion is everywheresome system evoke certain emotions, but getting there depends on prior knowledge Like an individual neuron, emotions consider the sourceassessment (frontal lobe) Strong emotion is designed to be a sprinter, not a distance runnerif not emotional problems!!!

The Fine Art of Emotions: Emotions is the arbiter between lower and higher brain structures capacity for understanding & solving problems (feel pain) Emotions flow uphillfrom emotion systems to complex reasoning systems Emotions can be turned on by our thoughtsconscious reflection of past or future experiences Too much of the good thing co-opts the work of the best and brightesthijacking the brain from the essential role which is a basic survival mode Emotions move beyond the passion of the moment mind body states can be regulated

Emotions do not dance alone; it’s platform is the physiological intelligence saturated with chemicals. The healthy functioning of those systems depends of the brain physiology
