Altmetrics: Analysis of Library and Information Science (LIS) Research in the Social Media Ifeanyi J. Ezema (Ph.D) Paper Presented at the 1st International Conference and Home Coming of the Department of Library and Information Science University of Nigeria Nsukka. 25 – 30 June 2017

Introduction Traditionally research evaluation is determined using citation counts ISI Web of Science, Scopus Google scholar h-index impact factors G-index I10 -index

Weakness of Bibliometric Indicators Narrow coverage of journals Indicators are skewed against some fields of study Measures scholarly impact only Manipulation of the indicators by authors and publishers Time lag for accumulation of citations

Bibliometrics and Altmetrics

Altmetrics: What does it mean? Alterative metrics for research evaluation determination of social impact of journal publications (Priem & Memminger 2010; Konkiel 2013) “new measurement for the impact of scholarly content, based on how far and wide it travels through the social Web (like Twitter), social bookmarking (e.g. CiteUlike) and collaboration such as Mendeley)…” (Galligan 2012)

Sources of Altmetrics indicators News outlets (over 1300 sites manually curetted list); text mining Social media – Twitter, Facebook, google+, etc Post publication peer review like publons, pubpeer Reference Manager – mendeley, CiteUlike, etc Policy documents Others like Wikipedia, Youtube, Reddit, F1000 prime, Pininterest Q&A

Objectives of the Study To identify LIS journals with high social media attention To determine the most used social media tools for sharing LIS research To compare the performance of LIS journals using counts and social media attention To determine the correlation between citation counts and social media attention in LIS research.

Methods The study adopted descriptive informetric approach Eight-five LIS journals indexed by ISI Web of Science were used for the study Data was extracted from Web of Science JCR and altemetric.com for social media attention to Microsoft excel for analysis The findings were analyzed using frequency and percentages and presented in tables and charts

Interpretation of the correlation test The result of the correlations shows that journal citations have a moderate significant positive correlation with social media attention in LIS research (r = 0.450, p < 0.05) Therefore social media attention is a good indicator of measuring impact of LIS research

Major Findings 15 LIS journals met the average social media attention and therefore, have the most altmetric attention. Tweets and Facebook posts are the most used social media tool for sharing LIS research. Some LIS journals have high citation impact but with low altmetric attention. There is a moderate significant positive correlation between journal citations and social media attention in LIS research

Thank you
