ACTIVITY: Brainstorm with others around you and come up with a definition for “negotiation”. What are the important components of negotiation?

To settle by discussion Negotiate To settle by discussion and mutual agreement.

WHAT DOES NEGOTIATION INVOLVE? Acknowledging a mutual need by listening to each other’s perspective. Creating dialogue about each of these perspectives. Finding common ground. Resolving differences in a way that is mutually satisfying to both parties. (Win-Win situation)

Rosy’s Dilemma Read the Rosy Scenario on page 76 of the Guide, including X and Y. Use the Rating Scale. Discussion of teacher’s response to Rosy’s mother’s concerns.

Practicing Participants will break into triads with one person role playing the caregiver, another the parent, and the third the observer. The observer’s role is to take notes and give feedback to both participants. Each person will have an opportunity to play each of the roles. Start with an assigned practice scenario and then participant can come up with their own scenarios.
