M. Battistin CERN EN/CV/DC 9th July 2009 CO2 kick-off meeting @ NIKHEF - Cooling activities organization at CERN CO 2 M. Battistin CERN EN/CV/DC 9th July 2009 M. Battistin 9th July 2009

The background (1/2) The LHC Detector Cooling systems have been mainly realized at CERN. They use water or perfluorocarbons (C3F8, C4F10, C6F14). The two exceptions are: LHCb Velo (Nikhef) – CO2 ALICE Phos (Russian collaboration) – C6F14 The CO2 cooling solution is very promising for the upgrade phases of LHC. Both CMS and ATLAS Experiments are investing resources to develop the CO2 concept of cooling. M. Battistin 9th July 2009

The background (2/2) The construction has been realized on the basis of sharp specifications and responsibility distribution. EN/CV/DC Cooling station Connection piping Distribution manifolds lines Heating equipment CERN/EN mandate Experiment Detector EN/CV Cooling network During the construction phase CERN and the Detector communities have worked in parallel on the specification base Was that division of competence effective? Was there some lack of communication? Could we have done differently? M. Battistin 9th July 2009

Detector Cooling Project At the beginning 2009 has been defined a new project on Detector Cooling. The Cooling Coordinators of the four main LHC Experiments The representative of PH/DT group in charge of Detector Cooling The representative of EN/CV group in charge of Detector Cooling The representatives of PH and EN management Are defining the streamlines of the Detector Cooling activities at CERN. Detector Cooling Project PH/DT EN/CV CMS LHCb ALICE ATLAS M. Battistin 9th July 2009

DCP Mandate (…) Recommend consolidation paths which will improve the long term reliability of the present systems Define common R&D programs for the detector cooling system upgrades and periodically reviewing it Define a set of standard procedures for the acceptance of the cooling systems (leak tests, cleaning, pressure tests, commissioning, etc.); Define a common database of materials, components and techniques suitable for the future cooling systems M. Battistin 9th July 2009

WBS: the Work Package definition Four main Work Packages has been defined: Detector Cooling loops leak repair on-site CO2 cooling solutions Consolidation of the ATLAS ID cooling unit plant Acceptance Criteria for cooling systems, Material, Components Methods and techniques database M. Battistin 9th July 2009

WP§1 - On site leak repair Research dedicated to finding and curing leaks in situ. Such line of research will provide invaluable help in case of unexpected leaks at high luminosity when coolants will be activated. Phase1: Identification and classification of several known sources of leaks Phase2: Leak repair by means of in-situ methods. Phase3: cleaning of residual and long-term reliability tests. Paolo Petagna (PH/DT) leads this Work Package M. Battistin 9th July 2009

WP§2 - CO2 Cooling Solutions Construction and installation of CO2 cooling system at CERN for the qualification of the thermal management parameters (HTC, CHF, DP/DT, etc.) of the boiling channel and the stave prototype. Definition of the cooling plant specifications (Hans Postema CMS and Danilo Giugni ATLAS) Construction of CO2 cooling plant(s) (Paolo Petagna PH/DT) Measurements and thermodynamics correlations validation (Hans Postema CMS and Danilo Giugni ATLAS) CERN Cryolab is already a relevant partner of this project (Frederic Haug, TE/ECR) We are defining the contribution of Jan Godlewki for the general coordination of this work package M. Battistin 9th July 2009

WP§3 – Consolidation of the ATLAS ID cooling We doubt the long term reliability of the present compressor solution for the ATLAS ID cooling system. The cleanliness and leaks development could be improved. Alternative solutions shall be identified. Thermo-siphon (gravity driven fluid circulation) cooling system study. Perfluorocarbon blends are an option. Alternative compressions solutions: oil free screw compressors, oil free piston labyrinth compressors, membrane compressors, centrifugal compressors. Michele Battistin (EN/CV/DC) leads this work package. M. Battistin 9th July 2009

WP§4 – Acceptance Criteria and database… A basis of common and agreed construction and acceptance criteria shall be defined and widely used as a reference for the construction of the future on detector and off detector cooling system. Leak tightness Cleanliness Risk analysis Performance test quality plan A common database of Materials, equipments, components and techniques will be the reference for the construction of future on detector and off detector cooling system Paola Tropea (CMS) leads this work package. M. Battistin 9th July 2009

Conclusions Engineering and Physics Department are working in close collaboration to consolidate the present installations and study the future ones The Detector Cooling Project has defined the main streamlines of the R&D activities for the future generation of cooling systems CO2 is a very appealing option for both CMS and ATLAS detector Nikhef is the natural partner of DCP for CO2 cooling system study and support We want to define with you the agreement to work together and realize cooling systems to be used as bench test for stave heat transfer qualification I personally wish to all of us a very profitable working day in Nikhef M. Battistin 9th July 2009
