The Battle of Hastings Nick Vivirito

Background Harold Godwinsen most powerful English family. William established English policy. Edward gives crown to Harold. William declares war for crown.

English Army Leader Harold Godwinsen . Mostly professional soldiers. Dedication to king. Shield wall.

Norman Army Leader Duke William ll of Normandy. 696 ships 20,000 men Mostly nobles, mercenaries, men from Normandy. Best cavalry in Europe.

Preparations English weak from Vikings and storm William landed in Penvensy. English quickly respond.

The Battle William used archers to weaken enemy. Infantry and cavalry would then charge. English shield wall stopped archers. Williams army began to retreat. Williams horse was killed. William lead a counter-attack.

The Battle Battle began to turn in Williams favor. English nobles killed. English scattered and shot with arrows. Legend says Harold is shot in eye. Without Harold or nobles English fled.

Aftermath William waited for submission. After no success he marched to London. Dysentery weakened William and army. William is crowned on Christmas day.

Legacy Most land was given to Normans. William gave away land for little cost. Land owners had to subdue natives. Conquest of England was easy.
