PHED 1 Opportunities for Participation Concepts of Physical Activity AS PE PHED 1 Opportunities for Participation Concepts of Physical Activity

Public Voluntary Private Sports Industry Public Voluntary Private This presentation will tell you the aims of each sector of sports industry, what each sector provides and the advantages and disadvantages of each sector

How the sectors are provided Voluntary Its coaches and administrators etc are all voluntary It’s funded through government grants, membership fees, lottery funding, fundraising events. Private The private sector is paid for by its members membership/ subscription Public Any services provided from taxation, this can come from lottery funding sport England or council tax etc

Private sector The private sector provides facilities for commercial and business use. It acts as an area of employment and has economic gain Private enterprises provide facilities such as squash & tennis courts, fitness & conditioning suites, children's play facilities, golf clubs/ courses and health and spa facilities.

Dis/Advantages of Private sector Can react quickly to demand Costs of joining are fairly high Can meet individuals needs Restricted membership means some can’t join Can restrict membership A level of social exclusiveness/ discrimination against certain social groups A sports reputation may suffer as its seen as exclusive

Voluntary sector of sports industry Includes all sports, teams and clubs where the competitors, administrators coaches etc give up their time for free or pay to play. It provides: sports teams and clubs local fitness groups countryside activities

Dis/Advantages of voluntary sector Based on enthusiasm Is very uncontrolled Easy to create opportunities Doesn’t have equal opportunities Isn’t trying to create a financial gain so costs are low Continuity can’t be guaranteed as its down to individuals A lot of financial support form external sources i.e. sport England Can be socially exclusive Funding is not guaranteed

Public sector of sports industry Its main aim is to provide facilities for the whole community Local authorities have the responsibility of building and maintaining the physical recreation and sport facilities for the community

Swimming pools, sport pitches, parks, adventure playgrounds, sports halls and nature trails are among some of the facilities provided by the public sector of sports industry The public sector will sometimes subsidise certain user groups. These will be groups like under 16s, single mums and the disabled

Dis/Advantages of public sector Is funded by the government/ council Aren’t always respected by the whole community Discounts for certain groups Funding is limited to national taxation policies Updates facilities regularly Economically challenged areas are restricted by funding It targets under represented groups Don’t have the same freedom as the private sector Improves schools facilities Aren’t designed to make a profit so relatively cheap

How to improve the public sector for best value Get the private sector to help run this sector of business Best value is a government regime aiming to improve the quality of local facilities. The main aim is for continuous improvements to be made. When councils are inspected the have two apply the 4 Cs -Challenge: what the council is doing compared with the best council - Consult: they have to contact the public and assess customer satisfaction - Compare: councils have to compare themselves with the services provided others and show how they are doing against the national best value indicators -Compete: Councils have to show their services are the best way of managing their leisure and recreation
