Different types of Vehicle Drivetrains What’s the difference?

Simple Auto Drivetrains REAR WHEEL DRIVE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

HOW ALL DIFFERENTIALS WORK

DIFFERENTIAL MODS FOR FULL LOCK

4 WHEEL DRIVE Works by locking the front and rear axles together, splitting torque 50:50 Makes for great traction but NOT safe for dry road use!!! When all wheels are locked, you can spin out of control when turning so the vehicle needs wheel slip to compensate for the different axle speeds 4WD can only be safely used off-road or in deep snow Some cars can also operate in AWD

All wheel Drive AWD send power down the path of least resistance (the wheel with the least grip) A two wheel drive car can only choose between 2 wheels, whereas an AWD system looks for the least resistance across all four wheels The better AWD cars have a center differential that contains a “clutch” that splits the torque and directs it away from the spinning wheel This “clutch” allows for the car to go between grippy pavement to slippery snow, rain or dirt instantaneously Better choice for most drivers!
