Rebellion, Ruin and Rescue Judges

A Left-Handed Deliverance Judges 3:12-30 A Left-Handed Deliverance

AMMON MOAB Amalek

Left-Handed Deliverance 1. God’s Agent of Punishment Eglon the King of Moab – a pagan ruler who subjugated God’s people for 18 years Eglon is pictured as an inept, self-indulgent, foolish ruler

Left-Handed Deliverance 1. God’s Agent of Punishment Principles God’s sovereignty – He uses evil instruments for His good and just purposes God’s discipline – His judgments are part of His disciplining love for the good of His people

Left-Handed Deliverance 2. God’s Agent of Deliverance Ehud (“where is the splendor?”) – a left-handed son of the right hand (Benjamin) Ehud is presented as clever and resourceful, a master of deceit; the antithesis of Eglon and the Moabites

Left-Handed Deliverance 3. God’s Complete Victory under Ehud’s leadership, the Lord gave the Moabites into Israel’s hands the land had rest for 80 years – a picture of the rest that God promises to His people

Left-Handed Deliverance Application 1. Those who oppose Yahweh and oppress His people are being fattened for the day of judgment

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!... 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you. 7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. (James 5:1-7)

Left-Handed Deliverance Application 2. God’s means of delivering His people are unusual and unexpected (i.e. “left-handed”) Directs us to Jesus – God’s most unexpected, unusual means of final deliverance
