What is Waste Management? Waste management “is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources. The management of wastes treats all materials as a single class, whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, and tried to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of each through different methods”. “Recycling is the process of re-using a given product (beyond its intended use), or producing a new product from a recyclable material” Recycling helps to reduce the amount of certain substances which need to be produced from raw materials. Some of these substances are; glass, paper and plastic. The process of recycling not only helps to conserve the levels of certain raw materials, but it also helps to conserve energy in the production of new products. Recycling old products to turn them into new products generally requires less energy than it would take to create a new product from the original raw materials Recycling

In pairs you are to investigate 3 different companies and their policies on waste management in particular focussing on recycling, the three companies are; Proctor & Gamble Next B & Q Gather information and present to the group next session As an extension activity you are to also investigate a company you either work for or are familiar with and find out their policies – or look on the keynote reports and find industrial information on environmental policies Seminar Activity 1

On average the company uses around 50 tones of packaging and made turnover of 3.2 million pounds last year.
