Objectives of session Recap on previous session – Human Impact Define waste management Define and investigate recycling Apply recycling policies and legislation to given organisation’s Objectives of session

Recap Human Impact Which ones did you already know about? What important facts did you find out? Recap

What is Waste Management? Waste management “is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources. The management of wastes treats all materials as a single class, whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, and tried to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of each through different methods”. Effective waste management within a company What is Waste Management?

“Recycling is the process of re-using a given product (beyond its intended use), or producing a new product from a recyclable material” Recycling helps to reduce the amount of certain substances which need to be produced from raw materials. Some of these substances are; glass, paper and plastic. The process of recycling not only helps to conserve the levels of certain raw materials, but it also helps to conserve energy in the production of new products. Recycling old products to turn them into new products generally requires less energy than it would take to create a new product from the original raw materials Recycling

Activity 1 – So how much do you know about recycling? You are to work in groups and look at the items in the box – there are some items that are recyclable and some that are not you have ten minutes to discuss and divide the items into 2 separate groups Activity 1 – So how much do you know about recycling?

What is the impact of recycling? So, why should we recycle? What is the impact of recycling?

So how do organisations do this? McDonalds The Body Shop So how do organisations do this?

In your groups you are to look at the captions you have been given and match them to the different symbols – you have 5 minutes to do this Have you seen any of these symbols before? Activity 2

In pairs you are to investigate 3 different companies and their policies on waste management in particular focussing on recycling, the three companies are; Proctor & Gamble Next B & Q Gather information and present to the group next session As an extension activity you are to also investigate a company you either work for or are familiar with and find out their policies – or look on the keynote reports and find industrial information on environmental policies Seminar Activity 1

You work for a company that is in the food and drink manufacturing industry. The company packages most of its products and does not source another country to carry out its recycling. On average the company uses around 50 tones of packaging and made turnover of 3.2 million pounds last year. The company has recently joined a compliance packaging scheme Log on to Business Link and research what recommendations are made for your company to follow regarding their waste management practices Workshop Activity
