Fall Season – Team Tennis The fall season began on August 7, 2017 and will run through October (depending on playoffs). What is Team Tennis? A team sport Best of 19 3 Doubles (girls and boys) 1 Mixed Doubles (1 girl and 1 boy) 6 singles both girls and boys

Players play singles and one doubles match. Singles is determined by challenge matches. Doubles teams are determined by the coaches. There are 19 total matches to be played, a team must win 10 to win the team match. In order to build team unity, players need to stay with the team Until all matches are finished.

Spring Season – Tournament Season The spring season begins at the end January and continues until the middle of May with the state tournament. Spring season is an individual season. Players can play Singles, Doubles, or Mixed Doubles Players will only play one individual event, not multiple like team season Student athletes will be entered in Freshman, JV and Varsity level tournaments depending on level. Players are allowed to participate in a maximum of 8 tournaments, not including District, Regional or State tournament. Players can participate in 1 tournament per week.

Practices Practices are held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and some Fridays. When we are not participating in a match or tournament (Wednesdays are mandatory tutorials) Practices are held after school when in season, either fall team or during spring individual tournament Practice time is from 2:00 – 4:00 pm All athletes must have transportation provided at the end of practice at 4:00. No student may remain on campus. It is a district policy. If an athlete is absent for the day or becomes ill Coach Hausler must be notified by text or email. The cutoff time is 12:00 pm.

Practice Every effort should be made to be at practice when in season. Make Doctors or dentist appointments after practice. Student athletes should use class time, homeroom time, and tutorial time for study time and other projects. There will be no practice on Wednesdays so that players can attend tutorials Being prepared for practice T-shirt, shorts, socks, court shoes, tennis racquets, and snacks as needed Grades are dependent on the athlete being prepared and participation.

La Porte ISD policies for all athletes Students cannot stay on campus after practice ends. All tennis athletes must have a ride after practice and when the team returns from matches. Eligibility Players must follow the “No pass, No play” policy in place by the UIL Representing La Porte High School La Porte ISD’s code of conduct must be followed, along USTA’s Junior Know the Rules https://assets-ssl.usta.com/assets/642/15/jkr_2016.pdf Physicals and Red Cards must be completed and signed for students to play high school tennis and to travel with team Student Athlete Medical Issues Please make coaches aware of any medical issue For example, student athletes must have inhaler or Epipen if prescribed

Equipment Equipment and uniforms are issued to each player Equipment checked out to players is the property of La Porte High School. It is the players responsibility to take proper care of all items checked out and to return them in good condition. The player is responsible for any items lost or damaged. Uniforms are to be worn during team tennis matches and high school tennis tournaments. Uniforms cannot be worn to practice, the classroom or tournaments not associated with the high school. Racquet bags are to be used to carry tennis equipment to practice, matches and tournaments. Racquet bags are not to be used to carry books and school supplies to class.

Equipment Players must provide racquet and appropriate shoes. Players are to be prepared for tournaments with the following: Extra t-shirts Extra Socks Towels Large Water Bottles (such as Bubba Bottles or Igloo type water bottles 32 oz. or more) Band aids Hair ties Preferable snacks Anything else that the player needs

Equipment Strings and overgrip LPHS tennis department orders string and overgrips with budget money and these items will be provided for the players If your child requires or wants special string that will be purchased by the athletes parents or guardians Stringing of racquets is free from Coach Hausler

Transportation Players MUST have transportation arranged when practice is over. This includes when practice is cancelled due to weather or other situations. Transportation is provided by La Porte High School to tournaments and matches. During the fall, team tennis players need to stay with the team until all matches are completed. During individual spring season students may ride home with parents under the following circumstances: Parent and student notifies coaches Parent may pick child up after the end of the school day at 2:40 pm. The athlete has finished all matches. Players must ride home with their parents (no one else unless there is prior approval made with the school).

Outside of school practice/USTA tournaments Outside of school practice is encouraged, as long as the practices do not interfere with school practices. USTA tournaments are an incredible opportunity for athletes to compete at a higher level and become comfortable with match play. Outside practice improves athletes skills Tennis players should be hitting balls every day USTA junior tennis provides a competitive alternative for athletes to compete and insure success. Please visit https://www.usta.com/Youth- Tennis/JuniorTournaments/

Varsity Letters Varsity letters (letterman jackets) are awarded to athletes who compete in team or individual tennis The athlete must participate in a minimum of 4 team tennis matches on the varsity level. The athlete must play in varsity tournaments including the district tournament.
