The Plot Diagram 3-Climax 4-Falling Action 2-Rising Action (Complications) 5-Resolution 1-Exposition

1. Exposition Usually near the beginning of any story characters are introduced. Setting is described. Background information may be given. The initial situation is introduced. There may be some foreshadowing.

2. Rising Action (Complications) This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

Middle of Plot 3. Climax 4

3. Climax This is the turning point of the story. It presents the decisive event or action that determines the outcome of the conflict. It is the point in the story when the reader understands how the conflict will be resolved. The main character will usually change in some way.

Plot Ends 4. Falling Action 5. Resolution 5 6 7

4. Falling Action This part includes events that develop from the climax and lead to the conclusion.

5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending. Major conflict is settled. The protagonist resolves conflict with antagonist. Includes the last events that conclude the plot and completely “un-knot” the conflict.
