FR Thesis

DO NOW Pages 20-21 Learning Target: I can effectively research a revolution that affected the world and compare to French Revolution Success Criteria: I can complete Cornell Notes that covers background, causes, main events and effects/ significance on revolution. Due at end of period: I can write a strong, clear, arguable thesis.

How to create an Inquiry Question Your question is critical. Get this right, and everything else is easy. So, some pointers are: make it specific and measurable in some way Include a reference to the topic/purpose/goal. Include reference to the main points of your argument Should be arguable with evidence to back it up (not a yes or no answer)

How to create an Inquiry Question Helpful hints: Choose something you are interested in (culture, politics, environment, etc.) Question is open to research Able to back up your claim with solid CD from research You don’t already know the answer Don’t write a question because you know the answer- it makes it unauthentic Should have multiple possible answers Clear focus Don’t state your answer in the question. NO: Why do we only use 3% of our brain? YES: What influences the percentage of our brain that we use?

How do I start making an Inquiry Question Piece of inspiration: picture, quote, current event, theme, unusual topic/object Brainstorm areas of interest and curiosity based on inspiration Translate areas of interests into questions Research Revisit Question to improve, focus, or adjust it.

How to Write a Thesis What is a thesis? Tips: Argument you make in your paper to reflect main point, idea or message Should be one to two sentences long Tells reader what paper is about and helps guide your writing/keep argument focused Tips: Be as clear and specific as possible; avoid vague words Indicate point of your paper, but avoid sentence structures like, “The point of my paper is…”

Examples Because modern cinematic techniques have allowed filmmakers to get more graphic, horror flicks have desensitized young American viewers to violence. Today's slasher movies fail to deliver the emotional catharsis that 1930s horror films did. Although the timber wolf is actually a timid and gentle animal, it is being systematically exterminated because people wrongfully believe it to be a fierce and cold-blooded killer. Americans should eliminate the regular consumption of fast food because the fast food diet leads to preventable and expensive health issues, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Homeless people in Berkeley should be given access to services, such as regular food donations, public restrooms, and camping facilities, because it would improve life for all inhabitants of the city.

Good, Bad and the Ugly On ½ of Inquiry Question/Thesis Examples, Write G, B, or Ugly- if Bad or Ugly rewrite to make it good. 5 min How do you know if a law is just? How is a hero different from a celebrity? How large is the world?  In this paper, I will discuss the relationship between fairy tales and early childhood. The many scandals of Hoover's administration revealed basic problems with the Republican Party's nominating process. There are advantages and disadvantages to using statistics. There are serious objections to today's horror movies. We must save the whales. What are 3 impacts of imperialism? What is history? Which leader of the previous century relied most on propaganda and appeals to fear? Which president had the most significance in the US? Who was president when the 9/11 attack occurred?
