Melbourne, Australia Unit 3

Fast Facts Melbourne is the most populous and capital of Victoria Located inside the natural bay of Port Phillip In 2013 Melbourne was ranked #2 in the lifestyle magazine Monocle’s survey of the most livable cities. Survey criteria includes safety/crime, climate/sunshine, public transportation, tolerance, access to nature, urban design, business conditions, and medical care.

The downfall is that it is very expensive to live there. Highly rated in areas of entertainment, tourism and sports. It is very well known for its performing and visual arts Recognized as the ‘cultural hub’ of Australia.

Climate More extreme temperatures because it’s located closer to the very hot inland areas but on the southern coast next to the southern ocean. The cold southern ocean can cause severe cold fronts Coldest temperature recorded was -3°C, but the average temperature in the winter is 7°C. In the summer the average temperature is 25°C

Attractions Similar to Sydney, Melbourne has something to offer for many different types of travelers. Tourism includes entertainment & culture, nature & wildlife, and beaches & scenery.

12 Apostles Rock stacks that rise from the Southern Ocean along the coastline Created by constant erosion of the cliffs from water and wind beginning 10-20 millions years ago Is a 4 hour tour along the Great Ocean Road

Beaches – St. Kilda 15+ different beaches Calm beaches (because it’s located on a bay) St. Kilda is the most popular of the Port Phillip Bay beaches because of its suitable conditions for swimming and accessibility to so many different activities – boating, parks, bicycling, walking, rollerblading etc.

Healsville Sanctuary Best place to see Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. Offers a close-up encounter with wildlife; such as, koalas, kangaroos, emus, dingoes, and platypus. Visitors can also visit an on-site veterinary hospital treating orphaned, ill or injured wildlife.
