Wake Up to School Breakfast with NSBW 2016! Provide updates from SNA national on accomplishments and available services and resources for you

Wake UP TO School Breakfast Then I think the biggest thing to think about as we go through this presentation is “ What do I want to get out of NSBW for my school or district?” Is it to increase awareness of the program or a recent program change such as Breakfast in the Classroom? Is it to increase participation or something else? Made possible by:

Emphasize the Learning Connection School breakfast helps kids perform their best! Check out the NSBW toolkit School breakfast helps kids perform their best at school – it’s proven! Use this to your advantage when communicating with administrators and parents during NSBW Check out the NSBW toolkit for examples of papers and studies you can reference

2016 Promotion Goals Increase participation and visibility Educate parents and students Get students excited about making healthy choices at breakfast with a fun theme These are the overall goals at a national level for NSBW 2016. Increase participation and visibility for our school breakfast program Educate parents and students about the importance of school breakfast as it relates to academic success Get students excited about making healthy choices at breakfast with a fun theme You can use these, focus on one in particular or tailor one or all to make them more specific in your district. For example you could add a target % increase in participation you wish to aim for. In my district, my goal is….. [add your examples]

Communicating Nutrition Standards Promote healthy menu options at breakfast Keep parents informed! Mail a letter home Update your menus Attend a PTA meeting Post on Facebook NSBW is the perfect time to promote healthy menu options at breakfast Keep parents informed of the fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy offerings Mail a letter home Update your menus Attend a PTA meeting Post on Facebook What do you all have planned?

Study Your Social Media Spread the word to parents, students, and administrators! Inform parents about the healthy menu items Social Media is now everywhere and one of quickest ways to reach your target audience whether it be parents or students. Use social media to spread the word to parents, students, and administrators! Use Facebook to inform parents about the healthy menu items Ask your school district’s communications office about policies and who you should send your posts to Remember to have parents fill out a media release if you’re publishing photos of kids A good clear photo or image really helps but it is best to chat with your school district’s communications office about policies and who you should send your posts to. Also, remember to have parents fill out a media release if you’re publishing photos of kids. More social media tips to help get your started will be available on the NSBW website.

Create An Ad Contest How well can your students sell school breakfast? National winners will receive prize packs and their ads will be featured on the SNA website! Every year SNA runs a contest during NSBW to help create excitement amongst students about the campaign and eating school breakfast. This year the contest is art-based and asks students to create an advertisement for school breakfast. Three national winners will receive prize packs and their ads will be featured on the SNA website! More information including complete contest rules and entry forms are available at the SNA website.

Ideas & Tips Hand out brainteasers, riddles, and activity sheets to students during breakfast to wake up their brains for the day. Participate in SNA’s 2016 art contest. Students can create their own ad for school breakfast! Decorate the cafeteria with “Wake Up to School Breakfast” merchandise like posters, balloons, student giveaways, and even aprons for your staff! Here are some ideas on how to celebrate NSBW and “Wake up to School Breakfast” Campaign. [First of 2 slides]

Ideas & Tips Poll the students on their favorite breakfast foods. Serve the most popular menu items during NSBW! Organize a raffle in the cafeteria with a fun prize like a bike or an iPad. Post a big piece of paper on the wall, and leave markers on the table. Students can write why they love school breakfast! Here are some ideas on how to celebrate NSBW and “Wake up to School Breakfast” Campaign. [2 of 2] Do you think you will use any of these ideas? Do you have any other ideas that you would like to share?
