The Integumentary System SKIN SKIN SKIN The Integumentary System

Exploring Skin Observe the back of your hand with the lens. Hold your hand out, I will place a drop of water on the back of your hand. Make observations. Tilt your hand, what do you observe now?

Exploring Skin Answer the following questions: What happens when you place the drop of water on the back of your hand? What happens to the water when you tilt your hand? Is the water absorbed by the skin? Why do you think the water is not absorbed by the skin? Does water ever exit the body through the skin?

Structure of Skin

Function of Skin Covers the body Prevents water loss Protects from injury and infection Regulates body temperature Gathers information about the environment

Caring for your Skin Eat properly Drink water Limit sun exposure Keep skin clean

How does your skin help your body maintain homeostasis? Helps to maintain the body’s temperature Too hot: more blood flows to get rid of the excess heat sweat evaporates to cool the skin Extreme cold: blood vessels constrict (get smaller) Keeps internal organs warm Reduces loss of heat through the skin Prevents the body from losing water
