Landscape Wales is a generally mountainous country which is part of the United Kingdom. It is situated on the western side of central southern Great Britain, between the Irish Sea to the north and the Bristol Channel to the south. It is bordered by England to its east and the Atlantic Ocean, St George's Channel and Irish Sea to its west. It is about 274 km from north to south and at least 97 km wide, with a total area of 20,779 km. It has over 1,200 km of coastline, and includes offshore islands of which the largest is Anglesey.

The Capital Cardiff is the capital of Wales and its largest city. It is situated in the highly urbanised area of South East Wales; its metropolitan area has a population of 1,097,000, which includes the city of Newport to the east. Wales' second-largest city of Swansea, also in South Wales, is located further west.

Languages Languages of Wales, Welsh language, and Welsh English The 2011 UK Census counted almost 3 million residents of Wales. Of these, 73% reported having no Welsh language skills. Of the residents of Wales aged three and over, 19% reported being able to speak Welsh, and 77% of these were able to speak, read, and write the language. This can be compared with the 2001 Census, in which 20.8% of the population reported being able to speak Welsh. In surveys carried out between 2004 and 2006, 57% of Welsh speakers described themselves as fluent in the written language.

Wales lies within the north temperate zone Wales lies within the north temperate zone. It has a changeable, maritime climate and is one of the wettest countries in Europe. Welsh weather is often cloudy, wet and windy, with warm summers and mild winters. Temperatures in Wales remain higher than would otherwise be expected at its latitude because the Gulf Stream. The ocean current, bringing warmer water to northerly latitudes, has a similar effect on most of north-west Europe.

The symbols of Wales Wales is primarily represented by the symbol of the red Welsh Dragon, but other national emblems include the leek and daffodil. The Welsh words for leeks and daffodils are closely related and it is likely that one of the symbols came to be used due to a misunderstanding for the other one, though it is less clear which came first.

Traditional instruments Traditional instruments of Wales include telyn deires , fiddle, crwth, pibgorn and other instruments. The Cerdd Dant Society promotes its specific singing art primarily through an annual one-day festival.

Place of Interst Wales has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Castles and Town walls of King Edward I in Gwynedd; Pontcysyllte Aqueduct; and the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape.
