Medical and School Externships 2018

Externships - Overview CDS program requires each student complete 2 10- week full-time externships. One in a medical setting and one in a school setting. These will happen winter and spring terms 2018 Will afford the opportunity to really hone assessment and intervention skills while determining what sort of setting you would like to work in following graduation. All coursework completed. Minimum clinical hours needed prior to first externship: 175 clinic plus 25 observation hours

Where can I do my externships? You decide! (in state or out of state) Think about where you want to work. Think about experiences you would like to have. Consider living arrangements. Externships can be in the same location or different. December break is the perfect time to visit to decide and make contacts. If you know where you want to live after graduation this is an opportunity to start networking. Will have to have an affiliation agreement/contract in place. SLP must have current CCC

Where can I do my Medical Externship? Hospital – Acute Care Adults and/or peds Fast paced Primarily evaluation > 75% swallowing Average patient seen for 11 days Changes every day/unpredictable Acute Inpatient Rehab Adults Range of disorders addressed – majority neurological dx Average stay 20 days Evaluation and treatment Pt has to be able to do tx for at least 3 hours/day More predictable caseload and therapy interventions

Where can I do my Medical cont.? Outpatient Rehab Adults, children or both Will treat range of disorders Evaluation Treatment (limited # of visits) May be on-site with primary hospital or in another location Home Health If placement is exclusively HH >> not an ideal setting for externship because much of the time is spent on the road. Difficult with billing. Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) Adults (~85% older than 70 years) Evaluation and Treatment Many disorders (swallowing, voice, speech, language) Clients will stay max 90 days with the goal of moving to a “lesser level of care” Will also provide service as needed to long term care residents

Schools Externship consists of two placements: September Experience Will happen between summer term and fall term. Four weeks – full time Designed to show how a school year gets started. Possibly assessment and intervention. Will get limited hours. Student Teaching Winter or Spring term Ten weeks – full time Assessment and Intervention IEP meetings 100-150 clinical hours Busy every day. Will see most of the same students for full 10 weeks.

Where can I do my Schools Externship? Any public school or education setting. Caseloads typically 60-80 students. EI/ESD 40-50 Most SLPs serve at least 2 schools. EI/ESD – 4-8 different sites Students usually served in groups. Push-in, pull-out, whole class, in home, tele-therapy Middle and High exclusively are difficult to find. Education Service District/ESD Lane ESD Specialty programs – life skills, deaf and hard of hearing, vision impaired, rural schools Early Intervention/EI 0-5 Preschools, dedicated classrooms, homes Not a local option for SE Elementary K-5 Middle 6-8 High 9-12

Contracts LAST DATE TO INITIATE NEW CONTRACT – MARCH 10, 2017 All off-campus sites must have an affiliation agreement (contract) in place UO currently maintains a range of contracts List with current contracts on infoCDS One for medical and one for schools Most of the contracts we have are in Oregon If you are interested in setting up a new contract – make appointment with Susan by January 20 to discuss New contracts can take several months (some up to one year) LAST DATE TO INITIATE NEW CONTRACT – MARCH 10, 2017

In two weeks: Bring any/all questions about externships. Next class, we will discuss timelines and how to find distance externships. Between now and then please don’t contact SLPs to inquire about placements Look at infoCDS for more information on externships. Come prepared to indicate where you want to do: 1. September Experience 2. Medical Externship 3. Schools Externship/Student Teaching

Happy Thanksgiving!
